There must have been scores of men who were involved in one way or another in the recovery of the bodies and wreckage from the three crash sites in the Corona area: the debris field first discovered by Mac Brazel, the place where the craft landed, and the place where the bodies were found in their âescape capsulesâ and where, one assumes, F. B. took his photographs. Few of these men have been located, and most can be presumed to have died long before anyone thought to approach them for interviews.
In the case of the crash by the Plains of San Agustin, 150 miles to the west, the arrival of the military was observed by about a dozen civilians: Gerald Anderson and his family, a group of student archaeologists or geologists, and government engineer Barney Barnett. Of these, Barnett told several friends a little about his experience, and Anderson has gone into great detail about what happened when the army showed up while he and the others were trying to make some sense out of a shocking experience.
According to Barnettâs good friend Vern Maltais, he said, âWhile we were looking at [the bodies], a military officer drove up on a truck with a driver and took control. He told everybody that the Army was taking over and to get out of the way. Other military personnel came up and cordoned off the area. We were told to leave the area and not to talk to anyone about what we had seen ⦠that it was our patriotic duty to remain silent.â
Gerald Anderson, in a September 1990, interview, went into considerably more detail:
The first thing that showed up, if I remember correctly, was a car that looked like ours. And it came up from behind, and it had driven right out to this thing, across the prairie there, the desert part. He was parked right over here [the site he and the authors had just visited]: Thereâs the saucer, and hereâs those rocks and right hereâs that flat area that we walked through.
I think the first one was that old military Plymouth, and it had some kind of red flag ⦠a pennant like football fans take to the stadium. There was a big star on the side of it, and then there was another vehicle behind, that was a smaller, Jeeplike truck that had a bunch of radios in it and two big antennas. There was a guy sittinâ in there wearinâ earphones and he was talkinâ on the radio. And then behind them was two of these big Army transport trucks with the covered-wagon-type tops. Was full of these soldiers and they [got out] here; they were wearinâ khaki uniforms and MP patches, and they had clubs and guns on their hips, and they were all carryinâ rifles.
They all came down here, screaming and hollering and running us away from [the saucer]. There was a black soldier drivinâ the car, and there was an officer with red hair that got out of the car, and he turned out to be the biggest [bleep] of all times.
